Google's Project Tango

A smartphone that can map the world around you with reasonable accuracy. Sounds like the perfect way to introduce newcomers to an unfamiliar environment, by providing them with easy to understand directions in 3D space. It does not appear to have high precision but seems to be accurate enough to model a living room or other architectural spaces. The mappings appears to be voxel like, although perhaps they can construct polygonal geometry through software without enough samples.

This makes me wonder, if they could not use more sophisticated hardware to map the space around us more precisely, such as streets and buildings, then include that into Google Maps, allowing for fly through virtual worlds without anyone modeling the geometry by hand!
